The Race to Gold: Brisbane’s Games Transport Legacy

An unveiling of the Lord Mayor’s transport proposal for Brisbane 2032 and beyond.

Transport and connectivity is one of our major focus areas here at the Committee. Just recently we held our third Innovation Mixer- centring on the future of transportation- and this week, we hosted one of our largest events yet, focusing on transport and Brisbane 2032. All of these conversations have reinforced the importance of having the proper planning and investment in place.

On August 28th we had the privilege of hosting Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, where he launched his visionary transport legacy plan, “The Race to Gold: Brisbane’s Games Transport Legacy.” This plan is a critical step in addressing the pressing need for a major overhaul of our current transport infrastructure, which has become increasingly inadequate for our city’s future needs.

As the fastest growing Australian city, we are aware of the shortcomings of our existing transport system and know that action needs to be taken now to ensure our success for the future. The Lord Mayor’s plan focuses on a comprehensive update to our bus services, centred around Bus Rapid Transit (Metro), offering a promising alternative that could significantly enhance our city’s connectivity.

You can read the Legacy Plan here.

A special thank you to our esteemed panellists—Catherine MacGowan, Gert-Jan de Graaff, Kylie Blucher (panel facilitator), to Anthony Ryan from BEDA, who set the scene for the conversation, and of course, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner. The Lord Mayor’s Vision for Brisbane presented an ideal platform to unveil the city’s plans for a more connected and efficient transport system, not only for 2032, but for the future of our growing city.

We’d also like to thank our event Sponsor, QUT for their support throughout this event.

We eagerly anticipate the developments of this plan and are excited to see how it will shape Brisbane’s transport landscape in the years to come.

SEQ 2050: Next Generation Skills and Industries discussion paper

The Committee for Brisbane collaborated with Arup to develop the “SEQ 2050: Next Generation Skills and Industries” discussion paper. This document delves into the background and policy landscape shaping the future skills and industries for South East Queensland.

To develop the paper, Arup conducted a thorough literature review and engaged in interviews with leading industry experts and thought leaders. Their efforts were aimed at gaining insights into the region’s strengths and opportunities for emerging industries and skillsets.

The Enterprise Sub-Committee played a pivotal role in championing this initiative as part of their work. The discussion paper was unveiled during the Committee for Brisbane’s third Innovation Mixer, themed “The Future of Transport.”

We extend our gratitude to Arup and the Enterprise Sub-Committee for their invaluable contributions, which significantly influenced our August Innovation Mixer.

In partnership with Urban Economics, the Committee for Brisbane has once again undertaken this critical research to provide valuable insights into our city’s performance and growth trends.

We look forward to unveiling the results and invite our members to join us in exploring how Brisbane has been evolving. Stay tuned for an in-depth look at the factors shaping our city’s future.

The Future of Transport Innovation

Insights from Industry Leaders at the Innovation Mixer

On August 20, The Committee for Brisbane and Arup welcomed over 50 members to the third iteration in our innovation mixer series, themed ‘The Future of Transport’. The panel was chaired by Prof. Tim Kastelle, Co-Chair of the Enterprise Sub-Committee and Director of the Andrew N. Liveris Academy for Innovation and Leadership, where he and our expert panel shared their insights on transport innovation. The panel included Dr. Kim Camrass from Boeing, Kobus Van Der Vyver from Arup, Bob Criner, Co-Founder and CEO of Stralis Aircraft, and John Langford-Ely from Bridj.

Members engaged with these thought leaders to explore how data-driven approaches can revolutionise network design and enhance demand-responsive transport. The discussion also highlighted the future of hydrogen-fuelled aircraft, especially for regional and remote areas, and the critical need for sustained government investment in emerging technologies.

With Brisbane 2032 on the horizon, it’s time to focus on advancing transport solutions that will improve mobility for both locals and visitors in South East Queensland.

Looking ahead, the Enterprise Sub-Committee plans to host another Innovation Mixer in the new year, delving into new themes from the SEQ 2050: Next Generation Skills and Industries discussion paper.

We extend our gratitude to Arup for hosting an outstanding event that highlights the importance of innovation and the exceptional work being done in Brisbane.

Sub-Committee Update

The Creativity Sub-Committee has been working hard to shine a spotlight on the creatives of Brisbane.  One of the group’s initiatives was to showcase a creative at a Committee for Brisbane event. The Lord Mayor’s Vision for Brisbane event on Wednesday 28 August provided the opportunity for the Sub-Committee to invite the Underground Opera to perform for attendees while they networked before the event. The performers and pianist showcased their skills and talent, providing the crowd with a taste of the creatives living and working in the city.  Sponsored by Archipelago and championed by the Creativity Sub-Committee, the Underground Opera was the first creative to have a spotlight shone on them at a Committee for Brisbane event.

A big thank to Bruce Edwards at the Underground Opera for working with us to make this happen.

Lifers Lunch

One of the Committee’s favourite events each year is bringing our Past Presidents together to share their passion for Brisbane and hopes for the future.
The Committee has a long and proud history having been established in 1957 and many Presidents over that time have contributed and shaped the Committee to what it is today.
Thank you to all who could attend this years “Lifers Lunch”, hosted by current President Kristan Conlon, and for sharing ideas for the Committee’s next exciting chapter.

Australian Government’s Aviation White Paper—Towards 2050

The Australian Government has released the Aviation White Paper which sets out the vision for Australia’s aviation sector towards 2050 to ensure it remains safe, competitive, productive and sustainable.

The Aviation White Paper outlines a plan to achieve the government’s vision for aviation – including 56 policy initiatives covering key areas of passenger experiences, competition, efficiency, sustainability, workforce, security, safety, airport planning, new aviation technology and connecting to the world.

With air travel increasing as we get closer to 2032 when Brisbane hosts the Olympics and Paralympics, aviation will play a key role in how visitors experience the region.

Pleasingly, the Australian Government has reaffirmed its commitment not to impose any additional operating constraints on airports, such as curfews or movement caps, where they currently do not exist. This is a huge advantage for Brisbane Airport in particular, providing certainty around its 24/7 operating model that provides a strategic advantage to South East Queensland and the broader state economy.

The White Paper also outlines initiatives to improve the passenger experience with a focus on people with disability which will enhance domestic and international journeys. The introduction of an Aviation Industry Ombuds Scheme will also provide remedies to consumers and investigate customer complaints about airlines and airports conduct. More information about the Aviation White Paper—Towards 2050 is available at Aviation White Paper—Towards 2050 | Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts

New Independent Transport Authority

In 2022 the Committee for Brisbane brought our members together to develop a livability issues and opportunities paper for a vision for SEQ transport and mobility by 2050.

This paper, fueled by member feedback, has a vision for a connected South East Queensland where people and ideas are able to move easily around our region: anywhere, anytime, anyhow.

A legacy outcome the Committee for Brisbane wanted to see for 2024 was for the establishment of a single, integrated transport (delivery) authority for South East Queensland.

The Committee for Brisbane working group members identified a need for an integrated transport system to coordinate routes and services to make getting around the region easier by public transport. This legacy outcome would also enhance the experiences of Olympic and Paralympic visitors who would be able to more freely to explore our beautiful region using connected and integrated public transport services.

The Committee for Brisbane therefore welcomed Premier Steven Miles’ announcement earlier this month, that a reelected Labor Government would create an Independent Transport Authority to bring greater integration to the state’s transport system. Translink would be moved out from under the Department of Transport and Main Roads, creating a one stop shop for trains and buses, making sure they all work together to deliver synchronised scheduling, services and planning across the transport system.

NIGHT LIFE ECONOMY COMMISSIONER

The Committee for Brisbane values creativity and the power of creating experiences not only for our community, but also for our local and international visitors.

South East Queensland is home to numerous artists and creatives who fill our city with art and culture, expressing the uniqueness of our region. The Committee supports the creation of opportunities for artists and creatives to be able to live and work in our city.

The Committee for Brisbane understands the opportunity the Olympics and Paralympics brings to put a spotlight on the region- including local artists and creatives. Athletes, spectators and tourists will be looking for a vibrant city where they can immerse themselves in the local arts, entertainment and culture as part of their Games experience. The Brisbane 2033: Our Olympics and Paralympics Legacies, Liveability Issues and Opportunities Paper highlighted the need to expand the nighttime economy as we approach the Games. The aim for this goal would be to increase the regional economic contribution (sales turnover) by 50% from 2018 to $20 billion per annum while employing more than 150,000 full time employees.

To build this nighttime economy, there needs to be a dedicated focus and effort to work with venues, artists and businesses to identify the barriers and opportunities for a thriving night life.

On 20 August 2024, the State Government passed a bill to appoint a Night Life Economy Commissioner who will work with local businesses, live music venues, and entertainment precincts to create a vibrant and safe nightlife environment. This focus on the importance of the state’s night life is supported by the Committee for Brisbane.

The Night Life Economy Commissioner will be well placed to partner with industry to support, promote, and advocate for key aspects of the night life economy, building growth, sustainability, and vibrancy for this important sector.

The Committee for Brisbane welcomes a Night Life Economy Commissioner and looks forward to working closely with them to bring about positive change and economic growth to city.

WE CAN’T WAIT

Ipswich City Council is calling for urgent funding for critical infrastructure

Ipswich City Council is one of the fastest growing local government areas in the state, with population growth expected to accelerate over the decades to come. To help cater for this growth, Council is looking for community support for its push for more State and Federal Government investment in local road and public transport initiatives.

There are several proposals Council is seeking funding for, including a mass transit solution between Ipswich and Springfield Central (including residential expansion areas of Ripley and Redbank), upgrades to the Cunningham Highway between Yamanto to Ebenezer Creek, and a multi-modal second river crossing to future-proof the inner-city road network to meet the needs of the growing population.

To show support for these transport initiatives, Ipswich City Council is looking for community members to join their Wait List. You can find out more about this initiative at Home – City of Ipswich
