A message from our CEO

It’s been a big month for the Committee for Brisbane and for Queensland, particularly with a new Premier and Government under David Crisafulli being sworn in this week.

We extend our congratulations to Premier Crisafulli and his team and look forward to working with the new Government in pursuit of our vision of Greater Brisbane as the world’s most liveable place.

The Committee expresses its sincere thanks to Steven Miles and his colleagues for their engagement with the Committee for the better part of a decade.

The transition to a new Government is never easy, and there is no doubt it will take time for the Crisafulli Government to appoint ministers and key departmental staff, before getting on with the job of implementing its comprehensive agenda and engaging with a long list of stakeholders.

However, with less than eight years to go until the 2032 Games, Queenslanders are now rightly starting to ask questions about how we will collectively leverage the biggest opportunity of our lifetime. Time to implement a visionary plan has not yet run out… but it is very quickly running out. Time is of the essence.

Much has changed since the initial bid for the Games was developed back in 2015- not the least being a global pandemic and multiple reviews into the efficacy of existing and proposed venues.

Things have also changed since 2021 when the bid was secured, most notably being that our already high level of population growth has kicked up to a new level, and construction times and costs have reached new highs.

The Committee for Brisbane has always prided itself on being a platform for thought leadership, engagement and advocacy for our city region.

Given the new Government’s commitment to undertake a 100-day, independent review of the Games, the Committee will be utilizing the expertise of its member network to provide a submission on our desired areas of focus for Government during this review.

Earlier this month, the Committee brought together almost 50 of its members to identify the most pressing issues for Greater Brisbane, with respect to the Games. Together we revisited the Committee’s comprehensive Legacy 2033 strategy, alongside Elevate 2042.

The clear takeaway from these discussions is the fundamental need to retain a focus on the original purpose of the Games bid in bringing forward (or finally delivering) the infrastructure needed to service our growing region.

We look forward to continuing our positive conversations with the State Government, the other Games Partners, and our members, on how we drive Greater Brisbane forward during this golden window of opportunity.

Drinks with a view with our President

A fantastic night of celebration and networking with our President Kristan Conlon on the SkyDeck at The Star at Queens Wharf.

On Tuesday 29th October the Committee for Brisbane Corporate Leaders & Members came together to say thank you and farewell to our current President, Kristan Conlon.

Kristan has been an integral part of the Committee for Brisbane for six remarkable years, including two years as Vice-President before taking on the role of President at the beginning of 2024. Her unwavering commitment and dedication have been truly exceptional, reflecting her passion for fostering a better Brisbane.

We appreciate all the time and effort Kristan has given the Committee for Brisbane and its members and look forward to welcoming her to events in the future.

The night was made even more spectacular by the stunning venue at Cicada Blu located on the Skydeck at Queens Wharf. A big thank you to the Star Entertainment Group for hosting this special evening.

Kristan will step down at our AGM in November, at which time a new President will be elected.

Enterprise Sub-Committee

The Enterprise Sub-Committee has been building their knowledge of innovative ecosystems and precincts through undertaking a series of site tours. In October members had the pleasure of visiting the Boggo Road Innovation Precinct to better understand how working together can bring innovation to life.

Organised by QIC, the sub-committee had a guided tour of Ecosciences and the Translational Research Institute Australia to learn firsthand about the collaborative workplace for scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs and professionals.

Ecosciences is a state-of-the-art research facility which includes laboratories, insect houses, controlled environment rooms, glasshouses, greenhouses, offices, workshops and a science education centre. This facility has research staff from the Queensland Government, CSIRO, The University of Queensland and other partner universities working together to advance biosciences.

The Translational Research Institute accelerates the translation of medical research and development into evidence-based treatments. The facility has cutting-edge technology to progress the development of interventions to prevent and treat human diseases, and to provide early diagnosis of treatable diseases.

The Committee for Brisbane would like to thank QIC, Ecosciences and Translational Research Institute for providing the Enterprise Sub-Committee with such an informative site tour.

2033 Legacy and Elevate 2042 Workshop

On 15 October, Aurecon hosted a member workshop facilitated by Articulous to review and prioritise initiatives within the existing Committee for Brisbane Legacy 2033 document and the State Government’s Elevate 2042 strategy.

Members workshopped ideas around transport, housing, digital connectivity, amplifying creativity, and accessibility.  Building community excitement and creating a positive narrative were highlighted as key areas for consideration for the Brisbane Games.

The ideal “Front Door” experience was discussed, creating a seamless experience for visitors. Integrating the airport, cruise terminals, public transport and active transport was seen as vital, so as soon as people arrive at our “Front Door” they find it easy to get around through coordinated, on-time services, matched with easy to access digital information.

The Committee for Brisbane will use this member feedback in our discussion with the State Government and other key stakeholders as we work together towards the Brisbane 2032 Games.

First Nations Advisory Group

The First Nations Advisory Group has been working with the Committee for Brisbane to provide guidance on the development and oversight of a Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

To progress this work, members came together in October 2024 to talk about next steps for the advisory group and ways forward with the RAP.

Through the Advisory Group, initiatives like the Indigenous Business Month Showcase event and First Nations Board Observer Project were formed and brought to life to grow skills, connections and networks for everyone involved.

Thank you to the members who were able to make the October meeting, and we look forward to what working together in 2025 will bring.

A lunch with the Games Venue Legacy Delivery Authority

Some great insight from Emma Thomas of GVLDA

We all know the social and economic opportunity the 2032 Games represents for Brisbane and the broader state, nation and geographic region… but did you know the Queensland Government’s share of the 9-year, $7.1billion Fed/State funding pool currently allocated for the 2032 Games venue infrastructure program represents just 3% of its capital expenditure over this period?

Getting the major venues right is vital, as it will trigger flow-on benefits to co-located precincts, businesses and communities. On the flipside though, there’s so much more to the Games than a two-week event, so we shouldn’t lose sight of the transformative potential of being in the global spotlight for the better part of a decade.

The Committee for Brisbane was this month delighted to host Interim CEO of GVLDA, Emma Thomas, for a boardroom lunch with members, where the opportunities- beyond the major venues- were discussed in detail.

Thank you to our generous hosts, Amanda Newbery and Sue Monk of Articulous, and to Blackbird for providing an amazing venue and display of Brisbane hospitality at its best!
